Mr. Sandy “sandstorm” M. Hurtado
Saint Louis School-Don Bosco

What are my reflections/insights/comments on module 2b?
(Analysis of the Learner and the Environment)

I realized that to be an effective teacher, I should know the needs of my students so I believe that Needs Analysis is important. In line with Learner analysis, it is also good for me to know the conditions that make students learn better and faster like when they: do hands-on activities, are physically and mentally healthy, are well-motivated, are in a place conducive for learning, are given constructive feedbacks, have inspiring and enthusiastic teachers, have clear objectives and are informed about the applications of the topics to real life situations.

It has been said that “The essence of education is connection. The key of to connection is to understand the learner.” It is significant, therefore, to be aware that students have different Cognitive, Phycho-social and Physiological characteristics. To be able to this, I need to go the extra mile to be more familiar with my students. Fortunately, Saint Louis School-Don Bosco does not only give me that opportunity, but it actually encourages us, Educators, to spend some time with our students outside the classroom especially in the playground where the children are more spontaneous in what we call Salesian presence or Salesianity. In Don Bosco’s Preventive system of education, educators don’t wait for the students to err to reprimand them, but we prevent them from committing mistakes by being with them through our animating presence. This demands efforts and dedication though, but it surely works, as evident by the success of more than 100 Don Bosco school all over the world. You should try it, too!
